WHAT IS MERANTI or PACIFIC MAPLE TIMBER

Meranti is a tropical hardwood from South East Asian rainforests, characterized by its moderate density, reddish-brown color, and relatively firm but durable nature. Known for its excellent workability and good finishing properties, it’s a popular, affordable choice for interior and non-structural applications like mouldings, joinery, furniture, and window frames. It is also marketed under other names, including LauanSeraya, and Philippine Mahogany.

Key Characteristics

  • Origin: Native to South East Asia and the South West Pacific islands.
  • Appearance: Heartwood ranges from pink to reddish-brown, with a moderately coarse but even texture and sometimes an attractive ribbon feature.
  • Workability: Easy to saw, plane, and drill; glues well and holds fasteners effectively.
  • Finishing: Takes paint, stain, and varnish well after the open grain is filled.
  • Durability: A medium-density hardwood that is not as durable as genuine mahogany but provides good value for money.
  • Other names: Also known as Lauan, Borneo cedar, Seraya, or Philippine Mahogany.

Common Uses

Meranti’s combination of affordability and workability makes it ideal for a wide range of applications:

  • Interior decorative applications: Mouldings, joinery, paneling, and cabinetry.
  • Window and door components: Window frames, door jambs, and timber doors.
  • Furniture and accessories: Newel posts, handrails, and various furniture items.
  • Light structural framing: Non-load-bearing interior framing applications.

Considerations

  • Sustainability:

Ensure the meranti comes from sustainably managed forests, as much of the timber is imported from Southeast Asia.

  • Finishing:

The open grain may require filling and sanding before painting or staining for a smooth surface.

  • Treatment:

While suitable for exterior use, meranti will last longer and maintain its appearance with proper decoration and a consistent care program.
